Australian scientists have moved a step closer to preventing the spread of Zika virus, after they exposed mosquitoes to bacterium that could limit the ability of the virus to be transmitted to humans.
An expert panel has recommended that Singapore explore the use of male mosquitoes carrying a type of bacteria known as Wolbachia in the fight against dengue fever, the National Environment Agency said on Friday.
Mosquitoes infected with a type of bacteria may be used to stop the spread of malaria as they show signs of resistance to the parasite that causes the disease, according to a new study published online in the U.S. journal Science.
