Indonesia will temporarily ban domestic and international air and sea travel in a bid to curb further spread of COVID-19, Transport Ministry officials said on Thursday.

The ban on air travel will begin on Friday and will stay until June 1, according to Novie Riyanto Rahardjo, Transport Ministry's director general of aviation.

The ban on sea travel on the other hand will run until June 8, according to sea transportation director general Agus Purnomo.

Cargo transport is exempted from the ban.

Other exemptions will include any flights repatriating Indonesian and foreign citizens, as well as travel by state officials, diplomatic staff and representatives of international organisations, the officials said.

Many other countries around the world have also imposed travel bans in a bid to curb the spread of the COVID-19.

Globally, the disease has infected more than 2.76 million people and killed over 186,000 people.
