Turkey to take counter-measures against UK on eavesdropping incident

Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said on Tuesday that Turkey could take measures against UK on spying claims, Turkish Today's Zaman reported.

"Our Foreign Ministry is taking necessary steps. If there are other steps to be taken, our Foreign Ministry needs to study them, " the Turkish minister said at a press conference held Tuesday in the capital Ankara.

On Monday, Simsek stressed Turkey would condemn the incident in "the strongest terms" if the claims prove to be true.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry demanded, in a statement issued on Monday, an "official and satisfying explanation" from Britain on allegations that it eavesdropped on Turkish Finance Minister during a meeting in London in 2009.

Earlier this month, British daily newspaper the Guardian said it had seen classified documents that detailed secret monitoring by British intelligence of officials at a G20 leaders' summit and a finance ministers' meeting in 2009.
