German car manufacturer Daimler has been fined 870 million euros (956 million U.S. dollars) over fraudulent diesel emission values, the public prosecutor's office in Stuttgart announced on Tuesday.

The prosecutor's office stated that Daimler was fined "for negligent violation of the supervisory duty" during the certification of its vehicles.

As a consequence of Daimler's lack of supervision, German officials had granted approvals for diesel vehicles by Daimler, "even though their nitrogen oxide emissions did not meet the regulatory requirements."

According to the prosecutor, approximately 684,000 vehicles were affected.

Daimler has accepted the fine, and proceedings were thereby fully concluded. The German carmaker stressed that it was in the best interest of the company to have "refrained from taking a legal remedy against the fine notice."

According to Daimler, the fine would not result in a relevant additional negative effect on its third quarter earnings.
