U.S. pop idol inspiration for Melbourne skyscraper

The curvaceous form of U.S. pop sensation Beyonce is set to become a permanent fixture on Melbourne's skyline.

An Australian architecture firm is in the process of creating a 226-meter building, to be known as Premier Tower, that is inspired by the shapely figure of the U.S. songstress.

A statement on Elenberg Fraser's website hinted at what had influenced designers: "For those more on the art than science side, we will reveal that the form does pay homage to something more aesthetic -- we're going to trust you've seen the music video for Beyonce's 'Ghost'."

While it is currently without a finish date, the Guardian Australia said on Wednesday the 68-storey building has space set aside for 660 apartments, a 160-room hotel and a shopping center.

However, not everyone is a fan of immortalizing the pop idol in the landscape of the city. Town planners are concerned the tower may be over-the-top.

"The building is considered excessive and will detract from or diminish the leisure and recreational purpose of Batman Park," the Future Melbourne Committee said last year.
