Security remains tight in Bangladesh, one year after a deadly terrorist attack occurred at a restaurant in Dhaka, the capital.

On July 1st, 2016, an armed group stormed the restaurant and took foreigners and staff members hostage. 22 people were killed, including 7 Japanese nationals.

The assailants included an extremist who claimed to be a member of a Bangladeshi branch of the Islamic State group.

Police determined that it was a terrorist attack targeting foreign nationals, and they have been cracking down on extremists.

Last August, they killed the suspected mastermind of the assault after an exchange of gunfire.

They have arrested others as well.

The Bangladeshi government says the crackdown has weakened the extremists. But attacks have continued in the country.

In March, a suspected suicide bomber blew himself up near Dhaka international airport.

More than 250 Japanese-affiliated firms operate in Bangladesh. Some of them have armed security guards that accompany employees.

Other companies let their employees stay in their factories at night, so that the workers do not have to go outside.
