Advancing political process only practical way to resolve Syrian issue: Chinese diplomat

Facts have proved once again that peace and tranquility are the most fundamental guarantees for human rights, and advancing the political process is the only practical way to resolve the Syrian issue, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Tuesday.

During the interactive dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry of the Syrian Arab Republic at the ongoing 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, Liu Hua, Special Representative for Human Rights of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said that the prolonged Syrian crisis has caused the suffering of the Syrian people for many years.

"People in many areas have been displaced, and the most basic human rights, such as the right to life, have not been guaranteed," she said.

The Chinese diplomat proposed the following suggestions:

First, all parties should abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and safeguard Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity.

The international community must adhere to the general direction of a political settlement, promote the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2254, and reach a political solution that accommodate the concerns of all parties through inclusive political dialogue, she said.

Second, all parties should unify standards and continue to resolutely combat all terrorist organizations in northern Syria listed by the Security Council, in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions and international law, prevent terrorists from continuing to harm the people or escaping or creating more disorder in the Middle East.

Third, the international community should provide the United Nations with sufficient funding to ensure that it provides humanitarian supplies to people in need throughout Syria.

At the same time, the international community should also support the Syrian government's efforts in its reconstruction in areas with a relatively stable security situation, repairing housing, livelihood, medical and educational facilities, so as to help the Syrian people out of the shadow of war and gradually lead a stable life, said Liu.
