Leftist rebel leader nabbed, another killed in S. Philippine clash MANILA, March 17 (Xinhua) -- A high-ranking leader of the leftist New People's Army (NPA) was nabbed and another was killed in a firefight with government troops in southern Philippine province of Davao del Sur, the military said Thursday. The joint military and police operation took place Wednesday in Buri village, Matanao town, said Captain Rhyan Batchar, chief of public affairs office of the Army's 10 Infantry Division. The apprehended leader, identified as Joan Casamorin alias Alvin, is currently the vice-commander of Guerrilla 72 of the Far South Mindanao Regional Committee operating in the hinterlands of South Cotabato, Davao del Sur, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat. Casamorin is facing charges of robbery, kidnapping and serious illegal detention, four counts of murder and robbery with homicide. The troops responded on information regarding the presence of armed men that resulted to a firefight. Recovered from the scene were a pistol, pieces of ammunition, three improvised explosive devices and the lifeless body of alias Jebjeb, Casamorin's companion. Casamorin was wounded and was rushed to a hospital for treatment. The NPA, an armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging war against the government for over four decades.
