Cuba opens to private sector but remains socialist character

Cuban President Raul Castro stressed on Thursday that the country will maintain its socialist character, following the parliament’s approval on a reform plan that will allow private companies to develop their businesses in the country.
Cuba’s National Assembly discussed the progress of economic and social reforms started in 2010 and the nation’s development plan until 2030.
Castro said the documents, previously approved by the Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party and now backed by the Parliament, will allow the “upgrade” of the country’s social and economic model.

“It means that we will change everything that needs to be changed,” said the Cuban leader.
He also warned against the concentration of property and wealth, even if private workers or small businesses are legal in the country.
Castro’s reforms have allowed for self-employed workers and small cooperatives, but maintained the strategic sectors of the national economy in the hands of state-owned companies.
