Arab FMs criticize Israel for security measures at al-Aqsa Mosque

Arab foreign ministers gathered in Cairo on Thursday to probe the recent Israeli security measures implemented at al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, condemning the action as a blatant breach of the right of worship.

The ministers said that the Israeli security measures, including the installation of metal detectors and security cameras at the mosque, were a violation of relevant international laws and UN resolutions, despite the measures being removed.

The security measures were installed after two police officers were killed in a July 14th attack. Angered Palestinians staged demonstrations at all entrances, refusing to enter the compound and prayed in the streets outside instead.

“Even if it represents a solution to a crisis it has ignited, Israel’s retreat from its irritating and illegal measures doesn’t mean there is a change in the attitude of the occupier,” said Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the Arab League.

Affirming that there was no sovereignty for the occupation of the “Noble Sanctuary” or al-Aqsa Mosque, Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned that attempting to forcefully implement it was “playing with fire”.

The Palestinian foreign minister, Riyad al-Maliki, warned that the crisis was not over. He stressed on the necessity to support Palestinians in Jerusalem to continue their resistance.

“The situation requires full and practical collaboration from all of us,” said Riyad.
