APD | The fourth summit of the Bay of BIMSTEC is being held in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, Aug 30 (APD) – The fourth summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is being held in Kathmandu on August 30-31.

Leaders of nations along the coast of the Bay of Bengal will be meeting in Kathmandu for 2 days starting today. Seven South and Southeast Asian nations, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, are part of BIMSTEC.

The leaders of BIMSTEC member states are expected to discuss building infrastructure, including roads and ports to make shipping within member states more efficient. Likewise, cooperation over wide areas, including security and disaster response, will also likely be on the agenda.

Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha, Myanmar President Win Myint, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, Bhutan’s Chief Justice and Chief Adviser of the Interim Government Tshering Wangchuk, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed and Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha have arrived in Kathmandu to take part in the Summit.
