Elephant kills American tourist in Tanzania's national park

A 58-year-old American tourist was killed by an elephant in the Tarangire National Park in northern Tanzania, police said on Wednesday.
Police confirmed the death of the tourist and identified him as Thomas Vardon McAfee.
The acting police commander of the northern region of Manyara, Mussa Marambo, said the tourist was attacked by an elephant when he was touring around the park with two fellow tourists from the United States.
Encountering a herd of about 50 elephants, McAfee tried to run away, but fell down. He was trampled by an furious elephant, the commander said, adding that McAfee died while getting treatment at a nearby dispensary.
Tarangire, the sixth largest national park in the East African country, has the highest concentration of elephants. Most of the animals are found close to the river during the long dry season.
