World2020-04-01

A government-run hospital in Indian capital city was shut down on Wednesday after a doctor tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19), local media reports said. The hospital building of Delhi state cancer institute's outpatient department (OPD), offices and laboratories have been shut for fumigation. The doctor visited his brother's house recently, who had returned from Britain a few days ago, Delhi Health Minister Satyender Jain told local media. "Hospital has been shut for today and is being disinfected." Reports said people who came in contact with the doctor were also being quarantined. It is suspected the doctor might have contracted COVID-19 from the relative. Earlier a doctor couple who worked in Delhi government-run Mohalla clinic had tested positive for coronavirus. On Tuesday evening, the number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in India reached 1,397, with 35 deaths reported so far. According to federal health ministry officials, 124 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement. Wednesday marks the eighth straight day of ongoing 21-day lockdown across the country announced by the government. Authorities have imposed strict curfew-like restrictions to prevent the movement of people across the country. All road, rail and air services have been suspended in the wake of the lockdown, except essential services which are exempted. A health ministry spokesman said the prevention, containment and management of COVID-19 in the country was being monitored at the highest level, and various actions have been initiated in collaboration with the states.(ASIA PACIFIC DAILY)
