Philippines: Probable cause found to impeach Supreme Court Chief Justice

Acuna MANILA, Mar.8 (APD) – The “super” majority-ruled House Committee on Justice found probable cause in the impeachment complaint filed against sitting Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno. The House Committee on Justice, after 15 hearings, voted with 38 in favor and two in the negative as they approved the motion filed buy ABS party-list Congressman Eugene Michael de Vera and found probablty cause in the complaint filed by lawyer Lorenzo “Larry” Gadon. Only two lawmakers Representatives Kaka Bag-ao of Dinagat Islands and Quezon City Congressman Jose Cristopher “Kit” Belmonte voted against the majority vote. It will be recalled lawyer Gadon accused Sereno of committing acts considered impeachable which include culpable violation of the Constitution, corruption and other high crimes including betrayal of public trust. The committee report and resolution will be submitted to the plenary and needs to be approved by at least one-third of the 292-strong House of Representatives. Should it be approved by the plenary, the Articles of Impeachment will then be transmitted to the Senate of the Philippines which will act as impeachment court. After the voting, all vice chairpersons of the committee were tasked to draft the committee report on the proceedings and the articles of impachment. Chief Justice Sereno succeeded then Chief Justice Renato Corona who was also impeached during the Aquino Administration. It will be recalled Chief Justice Sereno, a relatively junior lawyer than the sitting associate justices of the Supreme Court, was appointed by then President Aquino Meanwhile, beleaguered Chief Justice Sereno is scheduled to face the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines tomorrow for a candid interview.
