Sri Lanka appoints a new Law and Order Minister

By APD writer Easwaran Rutnam COLOMBO, March 8 (APD) - Sri Lanka on Thursday appointed a new Minister of Law and Order as the island looked to contain communal clashes between Buddhists and Muslims. Minister of Public Administration and Management Ranjith Madduma Bandara was appointed as the new Minister of Law and Order by President Maithripala Sirisena. The letter of appointment was handed over to the Minister by the President. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Secretary to the President Austin Fernando were present on this occasion. Wickremesinghe held the post earlier and it was expected to be given to former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka. However it was reported that the President was not keen to give the post to Fonseka. A curfew was declared this week in the central town of Kandy after Buddhists attacked minority Muslims. (ASIA PACIFIC DAILY)
