APD | Thirty-one road construction workers killed in Indonesia’s Papua: police

By APD writer Aditya NugrahaJAKARTA, Dec. 4 (APD) -- Indonesian police said on Monday that 31 workers of Trans Papua road construction have been killed in the easternmost province’s regency of Nduga, adding that detachment of police and troops to the location was underway at present.Cited to information obtained from locals, Spokesman of Papua Provincial Police Headquarters Mustafa Kamal said that the killing took place on Sunday in Trans Papua road construction sites in Kali Yugi and Kali Aurak in the regency.Kamal said the killings were conducted in two stages with the first one was against 24 workers in the location while the second one was against 7 workers who hide in a residence of regional parliament member.“There were 8 workers who managed to save themselves by hiding in the residence, but eventually were picked and being killed. 7 were killed at that time, while the other 1 managed to escape. He was yet to be found at present,” Mustafa said as quoted by local media.Prior to the killing, project manager in the project site received a phone call on Saturday from an unidentified number which he did not understand what the caller said, Mustafa said.Road leading to the location had already blocked allegedly by perpetrators according to the information were a group of armed gang.Trans Papua road project was initiated by President Joko Widodo in his attempt to facilitate land transport in the mountainous province.The project spans 4,325 kilometers from Papua northern city of Sorong to easternmost city of Merauke, expected to be settled in 2019.Papua has been lingered with separatism issue with secessionist groups demanded an independence in the mineral-rich province, separated from Indonesia.Hundreds of Papuans staged demonstrations in Indonesia’s eastern region cities on Saturday demanding a referendum be held in West Papua.(ASIA PACIFIC DAILY)
