A sleek Chanel rocket was the talk of Paris this morning, as Karl Lagerfeld had conjured an intergalactic mood for his

by way of a ceiling-grazing starship. That larger-than-life set called for an equally theatrical beauty look, one that channeled Barbarella, the outerspace agent brought to life by Jane Fonda in 1968.

“The look was a nod to the ultimate space age icon,” explained backstage hairstylist Sam McKnight. “Karl wanted a strong silhouette—the ’60s headbands and makeup demanded a big gravity-defying shape—so Chanelarella was born.” To craft the bombshell bouffant hair, McKnight and his team vigorously backcombed models’ lengths to get the right volume, augmented by Cool Girl texturizer and Modern hairspray from the stylist‘s soon-to-launch line of products; a simple leather or brightly embellished headband at the crown was the finishing touch. “[It] can easily be adapted for a more down-to-earth look,” he added. With those pretty headbands likely destined for stores next season, it’s safe to say plenty of real girls will be finding their own big-haired bombshell alter ego soon.
