Ecuador's Vice Minister of Health Xavier Solorzano highlighted on Friday China's cooperation in facing the COVID-19 pandemic in the South American country, which has registered 106,481 cases and 6,248 deaths so far.

"The relationship with China, with the Chinese government, has been very active and decisive in strengthening the response that as a country we have been able to give to the pandemic," Solorzano told Xinhua.

He said that China has shared useful information, especially its experience in handling the outbreak, since the beginning of the pandemic in Ecuador on Feb. 29.

Solorzano also praised the COVID-19 video conferences arranged by China, which were attended by health authorities and specialists from both countries.

He believed that having the opportunity to participate in those video conferences was "very helpful" for the professionals who are on the front line against the virus, updating their knowledge about the available therapeutic tools at that time.

"For Ecuador, the cooperation that China offers us and the support we have received are very welcome, and we are grateful that we continue to have that support," Solorzano said.

He also praised the discipline of Chinese society and the government's efforts to win the battle against COVID-19, saying that China should be an example for Latin American countries.

Solorzano said China has an advantage over Latin American countries for having "a more disciplined population and a much firmer government." He said infection continues to spread despite curfews and social-distancing measures in Latin America, as many people ignore government warnings.

Latin America and the Caribbean have reported over six million infections and more than 200,000 deaths from the virus so far.
