The Egyptian cabinet led by Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi on Thursday accepted the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Ziad Bahaa-Eddin, official news agency MENA reported.

On Monday, Bahaa-Eddin, also the minister of international cooperation, tendered his resignation to Beblawi amid reports about an expected cabinet reshuffle.

The deputy prime minister, who tendered his resignation three times before, has been critical of some of Beblawi's decisions, particularly the controversial protest law.

In an earlier statement, Bahaa-Eddin said "my role will be more beneficial in political work as the country is preparing for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections."

Meanwhile, Beblawi on Thursday assigned Planning Minister Ashraf al-Arabi to be temporarily in charge of the international cooperation ministry.

Egypt is heading toward presidential and parliamentary elections in the coming months after the approval of a new constitution, as part of the country's future roadmap following the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the army in early July 2013.

There have been speculations of a major cabinet reshuffle awaiting the anticipated resignation of military chief and Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and his announcement of running for president.
