Both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona dropped points on Saturday in the Spanish Liga Santander as they were held to draws away to Athletic Club Bilbao and at home to Celta Vigo.
Barcelona kicked off the day with a surprise as they were held 2-2 at home to Celta who are coached by former Barca assistant boss, Juan Carlos Unzue.
Celta opened the scoring through Iago Aspas after 20 minutes, only for Leo Messi to equalize only two minutes later.
Barca took the lead thanks to Luis Suarez in the 62nd minute, but eight minutes later Aspas set up Maxi Gomez to assure a share of the points and to make matters worse for Barca, defender Samuel Umtiti suffered a muscle injury in the same move which will see him miss the next two months.
That allowed Real Madrid the chance to close the gap at the top of the table, but once again Zinedine Zidane' s side fired blanks as they were held 0-0 away to Athletic Club Bilbao.
An even first half saw both sides create chances, but in the second half Madrid wasted chances to win the game with some wayward finishing and ended up with 10 men after Sergio Ramos was sent off for a second yellow card.
Former Real Sociedad striker Antoine Griezmann scored an 89th minute goal against his former club as Atletico Madrid came back from a goal down to win 2-1 at home to the Basque side.
Willian Jose put Real Sociedad ahead from the penalty spot after Jan Oblak fouled Mikel Oyarzabal, but Felipe Luis levelled with 25 minutes remaining following a pass from Saul Niguez and Saul again turned provider for Griezmann' s late winner.
Sevilla also claimed three points with a hard-fought won against Deportivo la Coruna, thanks to a goal from Wissam Ben Yedder on the stroke of halftime and a second half strike from Michael Krohn Dehli.
