Kenya's COVID-19 deaths top 1,000

The number of COVID-19 deaths in Kenya surpassed the 1,000 mark on Sunday as the country reported 17 new fatalities, taking its total number to 1,013.

The figures were reported by the Minister of Health Mutahi Kagwe, who also noted that 685 more positive cases had been recorded in the last 24 hours. The country has now reported a total of 55,877 confirmed cases.

Of the reported new cases, 659 are Kenyans and 26 are foreigners.

Kenya is one of a number of countries in Africa that have seen a recent upsurge in daily new infections, pointing towards a second wave of the pandemic on the continent.

In Africa, a total of nine countries, Kenya included, had registered more than 50,000 COVID-19 cases by Sunday afternoon.
