Rebellious inmates and authorities reached an agreement Monday afternoon after four inmates were killed in a prison riot in the southern city of Cascavel in Parana state, local press said.

Under the agreement, the two wardens held hostages by the inmates would be released after 600 inmates were transferred to other places.

The transfer that started soon after the deal was reached was suspended Monday evening over security concerns. It is scheduled to be resumed Tuesday morning.

The riot erupted Sunday morning in the Cascavel state penintentiary, whose inmates have demanded better facilities, according to the authorities.

The rebellious inmates beheaded two inmates and threw two others from the roof, while keeping two wardens in captivity.

It is not known yet the extent of the damage inflicted on the prison or whether there are other victims.

The Cascavel State Penitentiary, which has a full capacity of 1,116, was housing 1,040 prisoners when the riot broke out.
