A total of 966 people, including former government officials, have been arrested on charges of corruption and misappropriation of public funds so far this year, Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz announced Wednesday.

Some of these people, arrested from Jan.1 to Aug. 29, were caught red-handed, Ortega told Venevision TV, adding that 748 people have already pleaded guilty.

The Public Prosecutor's Office is working to recover the public funds or valuables smuggled out of the country by some of the accused, she added.

"We are working on repatriating the dollars (of) those persons who have fled justice and are abroad, we have information that they have property and dollars obtained through illicit means, we have already started working on that," said Ortega.

She noted that Venezuela planned to request International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to help arrest Rafael Isea, the former governor of Aragua state, who is on the charge of embezzlement but has fled the country.
