After losing contact with her 11-year-old daughter Baobao after the magnitude-7.0 earthquake that struck Jiuzhaigou county on Tuesday night, Ms. Si from Luoyang city in Henan Province never expected to see her daughter next on television.

One day before the disaster happened, Baobao and her father traveled with a tour group to the scenic area of Jiuzhaigou in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Not expecting anything to go wrong, Ms. Si didn’t ask about their travel plans, hotel information or contact number of the travel agency.

On Tuesday night, Ms. Si received a phone call from a concerned friend, who notified her of the potential danger facing her family. Ms. Si started to call her husband and Baobao, but no one answered the phone.

Half an hour later, the father called back. “He said they were safe, but the signal was really poor and only lasted a few seconds.” Ms. Si told the Luoyang Evening News.

After the initial phone call, Ms. Si lost all contact with her husband and her daughter, whose phones were both powered off.

Feeling helpless, Ms. Si glued herself to the television and kept checking the news, when she casually spotted her daughter in a CCTV report on Thursday about stranded tourists.

“I couldn’t feel luckier,” the mother choked with relief.

Later on Thursday night, Ms. Si told the local paper that she had reestablished connections with her family, and that Baobao and her father were on their way back home.
