US President Donald Trump met with his Afghan counterpart Ashraf Ghani on Sunday in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, according to a statement released by the White House on Monday.

The two leaders were both attending the Arab Islamic American Summit. In their meeting on the sidelines of the summit, they discussed security and the fight against terrorism.

"President Trump welcomed President Ghani’s leadership in Afghanistan on fighting terrorism and implementing key reforms. He also commended the brave service of Afghan security forces as they fight to secure their country," the White House's statement read.

Earlier this month, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the military alliance currently has 13,450 troops in Afghanistan and is assessing a request to send more troops there.
