Oh, to be a fly on the wall for the professional conversations that must go on at Moschino. Wouldn’t you have loved to be in the decision to send out a day-of-show e-mail to all attendees informing them that they “are welcome to only ‘bring the cheese slice’ (without the trap) to simplify matters?” For those not on the list, the hard invite was a mousetrap with a piece of paper cut to look like Swiss cheese. Or what about the design meeting wherea roll of toilet paper slung on a gold chain was proposed as a handbag? It was one of many rewarding sight gags in Jeremy Scott’s “cardboard couture” collection built around the idea of a rich clotheshorse who’s gone dead broke.
The show opened with models in neat suits and jackets made to resemblepacking materials: a cardboard suit trimmed in packing tape; a sack dress that was literally a sack; boots that looked like corrugated cardboard and suits made out of moving blankets, all of it done in riffs on classic lady silhouettes. magazine editorials fashioned into fashion. That was actually the most underwhelming portion of the show, but Scott kicked it into high gear for the finale. With George Michael’s “Too Funky” cued up, the looks rivaled the vintage kitsch in Michael’s video. Anna Cleveland pulled the curtains down, Scarlett O’Hara style. There was a dress layered under a dry cleaning bag, accessorized with a single, missing sock purse, a Hefty bag cocktail dress that erupted around the shoulders in a ruffle of garbage and a hilarious shower curtain gown complete withbathmat stole.
Scott’s concepts are familiar, perhaps formulaic. Sometimes the jokes get old over the course of the show, but this one didn’t — maybe because the theme was relevant in a roundabout way. Asked what put him in the mood for a down-and-out moment, Scott delivered his signature aw-shucks deadpan. “I mean, look where we are. If these ain’t hard times, I don’t know what they are. It’s a very astute time in politics in America.” Maybe so, but Scott’s not a downer. The show made you giggle and appreciate a fashion pun. And as one attendee said on the way out, “George Michael helped.”
