**Hanoi, October 23 (APD) ** – General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong was elected as Vietnam’s State President for the 2016-2021 tenure at the ongoing sixth session of the 14th National Assembly (NA) on October 23.

Right after the result of the vote, conducted in the morning the same day, was announced in the afternoon, the new President had a swearing-in ceremony at the NA hall, vowing to stay absolutely loyal to the nation, people and the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and to exert every effort to complete all missions assigned by the Party, State and people.

Noting that although Vietnam has reaped great achievements but is still facing many challenges, including the unpredictable developments in the world situation and the heavy workload inside the country, especially the preparations for the 13th Party Congress, he expressed his hope for broad support from leaders and former leaders of the Party, State, the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF), NA deputies, voters and people, as well as coordination from the NA, Government and VFF agencies, socio-political organisations, judicial bodies, and localities.

Speaking after the ceremony, he said that the new position is both a great honour and a heavy responsibility, and pledged to work hard to fulfill the promises he had made.

Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong was born on April 14, 1944 in Dong Hoi commune, Dong Anh district, Hanoi. He was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam on December 19, 1968.

From June 2006 to July 2011, he served as Chairman of the National Assembly, 11th and 12th tenures, Secretary of the National Assembly's Party Committee, and member of the Council for National Defence and Security.

He has assumed the role as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and Secretary of the Central Military Commission in January 2011.
