The Chinese navy conducted its first joint exercises with Myanmar's navy on Sunday in the Gulf of Mottama, as part of its four-day visit to the nation.

The Chinese ships arrived in Yangon on Thursday for a goodwill visit, said Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian at a press conference on Saturday.

Three Chinese warships, including guided-missile destroyer Changchun, guided-missile frigate Jinzhou and replenishment ship Chaohu, took part in the joint drills.

The F11 Aung Zeya and UMS Anawrahta (771), two Myanmar frigates, also participated in the exercises.

"The drills would involve exercises in fleet formation, fleet communication and joint search-and-rescue operations," said Wu.

China is willing to strengthen strategic communication and deepen cooperation with Myanmar, while making joint efforts to safeguard regional peace and stability, and promote bilateral ties, he added.
