The suspect who shot to injure two fellow students at a middle school in the U.S. state of New Mexico Tuesday was said to be a 12-year-old male student.
Authorities released more details about the shooting at a press conference held hours after shots were fired at Berrendo Middle School in New Mexico's southeastern city of Roswell, local media KOB reported.
According to Governor Susana Martinez, the suspect, a seventh grader, opened fire on a group of students in the gymnasium before school started Tuesday. She confirmed the injured were a 12-year- old boy and 13-year-old girl. A school staff member also suffered minor injuries when he stopped the suspect.
The injured 12-year-old boy was said to be in critical condition at a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, while the injured girl was listed in serious condition at the same hospital, according to the news report.
Students who witnessed the shooting recounted the suspect shot the boy twice in the face and shot the girl in the arm.
The suspect is now placed in state police custody. His motive of shooting was not known yet. Nofurther details were available.
The school was placed on lockdown immediately after the shooting, with students being evacuated to a nearby shopping mall where anxious parents picked them up. It's not clear if the school will resume classes Wednesday.
