Australian pizza company unveils world's first Pizza delivery robot

Australian pizza company Domino's has unveiled the world's first autonomous pizza delivery robot.

The military robot prototype named "Domino's Robotic Unit" or DRU, will use lasers to navigate around obstacles to deliver pizzas and accept payment from customers.

The autonomous vehicles are set to open up new opportunities and create an innovation drive for Domino's globally and in Australia, said Domino's Group CEO and Managing Director Don Meij in a statement on Friday.

"This highlights what can happen when disruptive thinking is fostered - it turns into a commercially viable and revolutionary product," Meij said.

"It allows Domino's to explore new concepts and push the boundaries of what is possible for our customers," he said.

"The DRU prototype is only the first step in our research and development as we continue to develop a range of innovations set to revolutionize the entire pizza ordering experience," he added.

DRU can travel at up to speeds of 20 km per hour and is built to navigate on footpaths, trails and bike paths.
