Brazilians celebrate New Year’s in Rio despite COVID-19 surge

While most of Brazil’s cities have cancelledend of the yearcelebrations over growing concerns posed bythe COVID-19Omicron variant,Riode Janeiro’s famed New Year’s Eve festivities will go ahead with scaled backevents.

The city’s authorities have announced several precautionary measures to avoidmass gatherings, but health experts are calling for caution because of the potential for the virusto spreadduring the party is very high.
