At least one policeman was injured on Thursday while defusing an explosive device near Ain Shams University in the Egyptian capital Cairo, state-run Al-Ahram news website reported.

The report said the injured officer Khaled Kamal was among the bomb disposal team that attempted to defuse the bomb found near the university and the Defense Ministry headquarters.

Terrorist activities escalated in Egypt since the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the military in July 2013 following mass protests against his one-year rule and his currently-blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood group.

Since then, security crackdown launched by the new military-oriented leadership on Morsi's loyalists has left about 1, 000 killed and thousands more arrested.

On the other hand, terrorist activities against security men and premises have killed hundreds in the Sinai Peninsula and other parts of the country, with Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM) group claiming responsibility for most of them.

The ABM has recently pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq and changed its name to "Sinai State" as one of the regional groups under IS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Enditem
