A black-rind Densuke watermelon, grown only in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, was sold for 350,000 yen (about 3,418.9 U.S. dollars) on Tuesday in the first auction of the fruit at produce markets in Asahikawa and Sapporo in Hokkaido.

The highest bid for the watermelon, one of 240 such melons, was 50,000 yen higher than last year's top price.

The bidder was a 47-year-old fruit and vegetable broker who said that he added 50,000 yen more to the winning price of last year in a move to provide little encouragement to the efforts of the farmers, according to local report.

The highest price for the Densuke watermelon is 650,000 yen ( about 6,356 dollars) in 2008.
