A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Friday that China firmly opposes the United States interfering in its internal affairs and judicial sovereignty.

Hua Chunying made the remarks on the comments of U.S. State Department deputy spokesperson Mark Toner concerning a case that a Chinese lawyer got seven years in prison for state subversion on Thursday.

She said the U.S. accusations are groundless and China urged the United States to respect the facts, speak and act cautiously, and stop making irresponsible remarks on the case.

China is a country under the rule of law, and Chinese judicial authorities deal with related cases in accordance with law so that the legitimate rights and interests of defendants could be effectively protected, Hua said.

She added the Chinese people widely supported the trial and generally oppose any actions that endanger the national security and undermine the social stability.

Zhou Shifeng, a lawyer formerly managing the Fengrui Law Firm, was convicted of subverting state power and sentenced to seven years in prison on Thursday.

He was also deprived of his political rights for five years, according to a ruling handed down Thursday by the No. 2 Intermediate People's Court in Tianjin Municipality.
