At least eight police officers were killed in Colombia on Wednesday in an ambush attributed to the Clan del Golfo drug trafficking outfit, police said.

A police report said that an explosive device was set off as a police patrol passed by in the northeastern municipality of San Pedro de Uraba.

It read that "the National Police rejects this terrorist act and will act jointly with other authorities to speed up efforts to locate and capture those responsible as fast as possible."

According to the report, the patrol was escorting a team from the Land Restitution Unit, which is in charge of returning properties and assets to those who had them seized by armed groups.

The area of the attack is where the drug trafficking gang known as Clan del Golfo operates, being known for murder, extorsion and other illegal activities.
