The National Day holiday, which lasted from October 1 to 7, marks a peak consumption season in the country.

Some 422 million domestic trips were made in China during this year's holiday, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Friday.

Domestic tourism revenue generated during the period totaled 287.2 billion yuan (around $40.5 billion), it said.

According to the ministry, local trips and travels to surrounding areas were among the first choices for residents to travel, and the proportion of tourists going to suburban parks, villages around urban areas, as well as urban parks ranked among the top three; they hit 23.8 percent, 22.6 percent and 16.8 percent, respectively.

According to a report released Friday by China's leading online travel agency Ctrip , 65 percent of bookings on the platform were for local and short-distance trips to surrounding areas.

Short trips and self-driving trips to suburban or neighboring areas have gained in popularity, especially among urbanites.

During the National Day, the sales of green home appliances also increased, a report by Alibaba showed. From October 1 to 5, the cumulative carbon reduction contributed by green home appliance orders on e-commerce platform Tmall made up 11,400 tonnes.

Data from Taopiaopiao showed that as of October 7, China's total box office (including pre-sale) of this National Day holiday exceeded 1.4 billion, with 267 million on October 1 and 275 million on October 2, reversing the decline trend of the industry.
