Tokyo stocks open sharply higher following Wall St. gains

Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher on early Wednesday, with its benchmark Nikkei stock index briefly rising more than 2 percent following the overnight rally on Wall Street.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average surged 301.52 points, or 2.04 percent, to 15,105.80 after dropping 2.03 percent Tuesday.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 24.65 points, or 2.05 percent, at 1, 230.01.

Major gainers included marine transport, metal products and construction issues.
