Beijing has taken measures to offer care for the elderly family members of frontline workers fighting against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), according to the local health authority.

Beijing has designated 24 pension institutions to provide temporary care for the elderly people whose families cannot look after them for participating in the battle against epidemic in the city, said Gao Xiaojun, spokesperson for the Beijing municipal health commission at a press conference Tuesday.

Such care services will also be offered to the elderly whose families are medics and have been dispatched to Hubei Province, the hardest-hit region by COVID-19 in China, to help treat patients there.

Senior residents whose caregivers are under medical quarantine, those who live alone, and those who are unable to take care of themselves as their families are receiving medical quarantine and treatment, can also enjoy temporary care services in those institutions.

The number of elderly in Beijing accounts for over 17 percent of the city's total permanent residents. Among the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Beijing, the proportion of the elderly is higher, according to Gao.
