Swedish police launched an investigation on Tuesday following a series of mysterious dead cow incidents last week, local media reports.

According to The Local newspaper, since New Year's Eve, there have been five dead cows washed ashore of southern Sweden. The police have launched an investigation into the origin and deaths of these "mutilated carcasses".

Reports say, of those found dead cow bodies, "several with their feet bound and ears cut off."

Police spokeswoman Ewa-Gun Westford was quoted speculating that the ears might have been cut off to avoid identification of the cows. She believed, the owner may have wanted to avoid connection with animal disease, if the cows had been sick.

However, of all the bodies found, parts of the identification tag on one of the cows is still intact, which, Westford believes, may shed light to the upcoming investigation.
