Superstar Serena Williams gave birth to a baby girl on Friday, US media reported.

The baby was delivered at St Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.

"Obviously I'm super excited. I mean words can't describe it," her sister Venus said just before she walked onto the court for her third round match in the US Open.

Serena, the winner of 23 Grand Slam tennis titles, including this year's Australian Open, revealed her pregnancy in April and she already vowed to make a comeback to tennis in 2018.

Spanish third seed Garbine Muguruza wished Serena well, saying "I'm very happy for her. It's such a good moment I'm sure."

Pop star Beyonce and Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal were also among those congratulating Williams on social media.

"Congrats Serena! So much joy for you!" Nadal wrote on Twitter.

Williams' coach Patrick Mouratoglou also congratulated Williams on Twitter: "Congratulations @SerenaWilliams for your baby girl. I am so happy for you and I feel your emotion. Recover well and enjoy without limitation."
