One U.S. service member of NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) died Monday as a result of injuries sustained during a vehicle incident in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar, the coalition forces confirmed Tuesday.

"The incident was not the result of enemy action. Two other U.S. service members were also injured and are receiving medical treatment," it said in a statement.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own," Gen. John Nicholson, commander of RS and U.S. Forces-Afghanistan was quoted by the statement as saying. "Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the families and friends of our fallen and injured comrades."

The NATO and U.S. forces completed their combat mission in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, after 13 years of military presence in the country.

Around 13,000 foreign troops remained in Afghanistan to train and assist local security forces in their fight against the Taliban.
