China's policy on climate change is very comprehensive

Green development will be an important topic of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2022. Janos Pastore, executive director of the Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative, will participate in the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference sub-session on carbon emissions and climate change.

Pastore said in a recent interview with the DongA Newspaper that the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference will help build consensus among all parties and push the international community to form joint efforts to tackle the climate challenge.

He said China has made great efforts to tackle climate change. "At the domestic level, China's policies on climate change are very comprehensive. China aims to achieve carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutral by 2060, and accelerate the implementation of the "1+N" policy system. The dual carbon target is motivating Chinese governments at all levels to step up their efforts to reduce emissions nationwide."

"China speeds up climate cooperation with the US, EU and other countries and regions." Pastore said that at the same time, China strongly supports the green and low-carbon development of developing countries and has announced no new overseas coal power projects. "I have noted that China and its partners jointly launched the Belt and Road Green Development Partnership initiative" to support developing countries in reducing carbon emissions by increasing investment and improving existing facilities.

To support countries in their efforts to combat climate change, the Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative has made specific recommendations such as carbon dioxide removal technologies and artificial solar radiation intervention technologies. Pastore said the latest report of the INTERGOVERNMENTAL Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) noted that despite the progress made at cop26, climate change is still at risk of exceeding the set temperature targets.

Pastore said countries should face up to the current challenges of climate change and promote economic recovery and green development in the post-COVID-19 era. To this end, the international community needs to strengthen cooperation, advance the global climate governance process on the basis of inclusive dialogue, and ultimately achieve the goal of temperature control set in the Paris Agreement on climate change.
