Heavy storms to hit northern Germany

A heavy storm is forecast to hit northern Germany on Thursday, bringing snow and floods to the country, according to the German weather service (DWD).

Low pressure system "Xaver" had intensified over the North Atlantic and set course for Europe, the forecast said. The DWD also expected heavy storms accompanied by snow in northern Germany on Thursday and gale weather in eastern Germany.

The bad weather will raise risks of flooding in German coastal areas. DWD meteorologist Ruediger Hartig said the North Sea coast will reckon with 12-level gusts and inland with 11-level, on Thursday afternoon.

The highest storm surges will be on Friday night, according to the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency.

Northern Germany has started preparations for the "Xaver" at full stretch. In some areas, ferries will stop operating and schools will be closed.

The region was hit by storm "Christian" in October, which killed eight people. However Thursday's storm is expected to be more vigorous.
