Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province, has ensured the smooth progress of construction projects with the aid of advanced internet technologies, despite the impact of the novel coronavirus epidemic, local officials said.

Luo Qiang, Mayor of Chengdu and the city's commander for the prevention and control of the coronavirus epidemic, spent one and a half hours on the difficulties faced by 28 key projects under construction through real-time videos at an online platform, on Mar 5.

These key projects are distributed in 22 districts, cities and counties in Chengdu, including industrial bases, hospitals, museums, and talent apartments.

"Were it not for the online platform, it would take at least four days to complete the inspection of all these projects," said local officials, adding that the previous on-site inspections would require them to drive at least 1,000 kilometers to cover the 28 projects.

Through a large screen at the city's network administration center, officials can see the real-time images of the construction sites, as well as the progress of the projects.

"The use of advanced internet technologies enables us to collect, analyze and process massive amounts of data about the projects, which greatly improves the administrative efficiency and eases our burden," the officials said.

Luo Qiang urged to vigorously promote major projects such as rail transit, east-west urban axis, non-motorized traffic system, intelligent new infrastructure, and major water conservancy projects, and ensure them to be completed on schedule.

He highlighted the implementation of "new infrastructure", including 5G base stations, new energy vehicle charging piles, big data centers, artificial intelligence, and industrial internet.

As of March 4, all 730 key projects under construction in Chengdu have resumed operations, according to statistics from the city's development and reform commission.

The city is scheduled to implement 1,000 key projects with a total investment of 3.33 trillion yuan ($480.6 billion) and an annual planned investment of 468.6 billion yuan.
