On Friday, December 16, the motionpicture academy announced the 10 films that are still in the running for an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects. These 10 films will compete for the final five slots that will be announced along with the complete list of Oscar nominees on January 24:
“Arrival”
“The BFG”
“Captain America: Civil War”
“Deepwater Horizon”
“Doctor Strange”
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”
“The Jungle Book”
“Kubo and the Two Strings”
“Passengers”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”
That list includes the films that were the top seven contenders according to our racetrack odds: frontrunner “The Jungle Book”, followed by “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, “Doctor Strange” (9/2), “Arrival”, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, “Captain America: Civil War” and “Passengers”.
The remaining three films took us more by surprise:Steven Spielberg‘s “The BFG,” adapted fromRoald Dahl‘s classic children’s book; “Deepwater Horizon,” the true story of the deadly oil drilling disaster that caused a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010; and the stop-motion animated film “Kubo and the Two Strings,” which would be the first fully-animated nominee in this category since “The Nightmare Before Christmas” in 1993.
Films that were left out include “Star Trek Beyond,” the third film in rebooted franchise and the first not to make the cut for Best Visual Effects; “Star Trek” (2009) and “Star Trek Into Darkness” (2013) were both nominated for this award. Voters also overlookedTim Burton‘s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” the video game adaptation “Warcraft” and the docudrama “Sully” about the real-life emergency plane landing in the Hudson River in 2009.
While Marvel’s “Captain America” and “Doctor Strange” made the cut, a number of other superhero films missed out, including “Deadpool,” “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Suicide Squad” and “X-Men: Apocalypse.”
