Israel says Egypt's cyberwar against IS causes cellular blackouts

An Israeli military official said Wednesday that cellular blackouts across southern Israel were caused by cyber fighting in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

The disruptions have been caused by electronic warfare waged by Egypt's army against the Islamic State forces, said a military spokesperson.

The spokesperson said the military is aware of the disruptions and it has engaged in "a dialogue" with Egyptian military officials to solve the issue.

Also on Wednesday, Israel's Communications Minister Ayoob Kara told Army Radio that Israeli military and defense officials met with their counterparts in Egypt for a "very important meeting" on Tuesday.

He added that the sides reached "an understanding" and the cellular reception is expected to be restored in the upcoming days.

Over the past month, the Egyptian military has been reportedly carrying out a large-scale campaign against IS militants in the northern Sinai, using specialized intelligence air craft.

The campaign has been causing cellular blackouts in Egypt's neighbor for over a week.
