Nepali journalist wins honorable mention at WMS Global Awards for Excellence

The WMS Global Awards for Excellence 2014 recognized Nepali senior media correspondent Surendra Paudel with an honorable mention, the board of judges announced Monday in Beijing.

Surendra Paudel earned an honorable mention in the Exemplary News Professionals in Developing Countries category, for his story on the harsh odyssey of migrant workers smuggled from Nepal to the United States.

"This is one of the greatest achievements of my life. The honorable mention will encourage me to move forward in my life and career," Surendra Paudel told Xinhua.

Paudel has more than a decade of working experience as a journalist in Nepal. He currently serves as a senior correspondent for Nagarik News, a national daily newspaper published by Nepal Republic Media Pvt. Ltd.

Nepal has been increasingly setting up media collaborations between its local publications and international ones.

"This is an important attainment for Nagarik News and for our reporter. We are thankful to the organizers for letting our journalists participate in this international competition," Prateek Pradhan, editor-in-chief at Nagarik News, told Xinhua.

During entry submission period, over 450 news organizations and more than 500 news practitioners from 138 countries and regions have submitted 1,424 entries in total.

Representatives from the World Media Summit (WMS) presidium member organizations and internationally renowned news agencies participated in the judging process.
