Iran's Foreign Ministry on Thursday summoned the Swiss ambassador to Tehran, which represents U.S. interests in the Islamic republic, over the U.S. president's recent threatening remarks. The Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said Thursday that the Swiss envoy was called in and notified of Tehran's "strong protest" over "illegal" and "destabilizing" presence of the U.S. forces in the Gulf near Iran's maritime borders.
Iran will defend its maritime rights with all power and will give "appropriate response" to any threat and wrong move by the U.S. forces in the Gulf and the Oman Sea, Mousavi said.
Iran's protest comes after the U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he has instructed the U.S. Navy to destroy Iranian boats "if they harass" U.S. vessels in the Gulf.
On Thursday, chief commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said that the U.S. Navy's "unprofessional and hazardous" behavior caused the IRGC Navy vessels' confrontation with U.S. vessels in the Gulf last week.
