Hong Kong's MTR Corporation has equipped more staff members with body cameras after a surge in the number of assaults by passengers, local media reported on Thursday.

The company said 40 of its employees were attacked last year, compared with 21 in the year before.

Its operations manager for the East Rail Line, Allen Ding, said most cases related to passengers carrying oversized luggage.

The MTR Corporation conducted a six-month trial with three body cameras at the busy Sheung Shui station last year and found angry passengers often calm down when they face staff members with body cameras.

Therefore, the company has bought 13 more devices for its staff working near the border stations, such as Lok Ma Chau and Sheung Shui.
