Russia supports strengthening the role of the United Nations (UN) in resolving international affairs, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.

In a video conference with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is visiting Moscow, Putin reaffirmed Russia's readiness to continue close cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies on vaccination against COVID-19 and the treatment of the illness, according to a Kremlin press release.

In light of the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Putin and Guterres called on both sides to end violent actions and ensure the safety of civilians.

As for the situation in Syria, they agreed to intensify coordinated efforts of Russia and UN agencies in facilitating the return of refugees and internally displaced persons, rendering humanitarian aid, and rebuilding economic and social infrastructure.

Putin and Guterres also discussed issues regarding Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan as well as climate change.
